Late Surge Lifts Scots over Centre, 74-61

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Will Crumly scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the second half and a key run late in the game sealed a 74-61 victory for the Covenant men's basketball team over Centre on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.

It was the second straight win for Covenant (2-0) to open the season.

After being limited to just three points in the first half, Crumly came through in the second half with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and collected eight rebounds in the win.

Myles Jones added 16 points for a second straight game, while Chris Barnette had 15 points, six assists, and eight rebounds. Brady Palmer was the other Scot in double-figure scoring with 11 points and three assists.

Covenant made the run that decided the game. Down 51-49 with 7:45 left, the Scots went on a 14-2 spurt to grab the biggest lead of the game to that point at 63-53 on a Crumly layup, assisted by Palmer, with 4:04 remaining. Barnette had back-to-back baskets during the run and Crumly had five points in the stretch.

The Scots stretched the margin to 13 on a Jones layup with just over a minute left in the contest as Covenant picked up its second home win.

Covenant led 29-27 at the break as Palmer scored seven points in the opening half and Jonathan Gernatt added six. Gernatt scored eight points on the night.

Covenant shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) for the game with seven 3-pointers. The Scots held a 41-32 edge in rebounding.

Centre (0-2) was led by Dustin Gerald and RJ Smith with 14 points each. Smith grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and tallied three assists and three blocks. Chez Moore came off the bench to score 12 points in the loss.

The visiting Colonels connected on just 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field.
