CARY, N.C. --
Jake Major scored twice, including the game-winning goal with 13 seconds left in the second overtime, to lift the Covenant men's soccer team past William Peace, 4-3, in a USA South Tournament semifinal on Friday afternoon.
Covenant (11-3-3) erased a 3-2 deficit with five minutes remaining as
Jay Patterson evened the score with his first goal of the year in the 86th minute. Major then completed the comeback with his second goal of the match in the 110th minute.
The No. 2 West seeded Scots advance to the USA South Tournament championship on Saturday and will face No. 2 East seed N.C. Wesleyan. It will be the fourth consecutive year that Covenant has played for a conference title. The Scots and Battling Bishops will meet for a second time in the conference championship match (2019).
A tightly played and back-and-forth battle ensued between the host Pacers and the Scots.Â
Trailing 3-2 after William Peace's Jorge Lemus gave the Pacers the lead in the 49th minute, Covenant fought back in the final minutes of regulation. Patterson took possession of the ball inside midfield and dribbled towards the box before getting off a shot past Pacers keeper Jacob Smith for the equalizer in the 86th minute.
Not only was it Patterson's first goal of the season, it was the first of his career for the center back.
William Peace (12-2-1) nearly answered just a minute later as Jorge Aguilar had an opportunity inside the box but missed his attempt over the crossbar.
The teams clamped down defensively in the overtime sessions. In the waning seconds of the second overtime,
Mercer Stout crossed a ball through the box and found Major who put the ball into the net for the game-winner.
It was Major's second multi-goal match of the year and gives him eight goals for the season.
Major gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as he got by a defender and scored from the top of the box. William Peace responded on Alex Hernandez's goal off a deflection in the 19th minute to even the score at 1-1.
Stout notched his ninth goal of the year in the 32nd minute to give the Scots a 2-1 lead. However, the Pacers answered again as Danny Alvarez converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
Covenant held an 11-10 edge in total shots. Scots keeper
Henry Hooks made three saves, while Smith tallied two for the Pacers.
