CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The defense remained at the top of its game for the Covenant men's soccer team and
Austin Berry's first half goal was enough to lift the Scots to a 1-0 win over LaGrange on Homecoming Saturday at David Stanton Field on the campus of Chattanooga Christian School.
It was the fourth straight shutout for Covenant (6-3-3, 1-0-2 USA South) and extended the Scots' unbeaten streak to eight.
After back-to-back scoreless draws, the Scots finally broke through and into the scoring column in the 18th minute. On a run-out,
Mercer Stout slid a ball into the six-yard box and Berry was there to clean up the shot from close range to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
The goal was Berry's second of the year.
Once again, the Covenant defense allowed very few opportunities from the opposition. The Scots held LaGrange to just eight shots, holding a 13-8 edge in the category. Back line play from
Jay Patterson,
Will Kenas,
Griffin Felton, and
Nathan Laughlin held LaGrange's top goal-scorer Enrique Hernandez -- who ranked second in the USA South with nine goals -- to just three attempts on the night.
Henry Hooks notched his sixth shutout of the season as he made two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Stout led all players with five shots, while Berry had three and
Jake Major had two for the Scots. LaGrange (4-4, 1-2 USA South) keeper Andrew Cole allowed one goal and made five saves in the losing effort.
