MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant women's soccer team finished out the regular season with a 2-0 road win at Huntingdon Saturday afternoon.
The victory was the Scots' third in a row and brings them to 6-1-1 in USA South play (10-5-2 overall). It also clinched the No. 2 West seed for the Scots and Covenant will host a USA South Tournament quarterfinal on Oct. 30.
Though Covenant was able to get off eight shots in the first half, neither team was able to score, resulting in a 0-0 tie heading into the second half..
It was then that the Scots would turn on the heat and go on to score twice in the period.
Covenant's first goal came off the foot of none other than Kailey Burrell, marking her third consecutive contest with a score. Burrell, who sits atop the USA South with goals scored this year, was able to get one past Hawks' goalie, Kiki Culpepper, in a penalty kick in the 67th minute.
The goal was also her 18th of the season, which ties her for third place in program history.
But the Scots were not done there.
With under eight minutes to play, Emma Riggs would score her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Rachel Wall. The score would put the Scots up 2-0 and seal their sixth USA South victory of the season.
Covenant outshot the host Hawks 19 to five. Other than their goals, both Burrell and Riggs totalled three shots apiece, all of which were on goal. Wall recorded four shots, two shots on goal, and one assist. Mae Pierce added five shots, with two being on goal.
Lucy Sandhoff played all 90 minutes in the goal for the Scots, earning two saves.
Huntingdon was led by Madison Tryon and Erin Cembrale who both had two shots. Culpepper also played the entirety of the match, totalling seven saves.
The Hawks fall to 4-3-1 in conference play.
