VIRGINIA -- The Covenant women's tennis team opened the year winning two matches in Virginia over the weekend. The Scots took down Roanoke and Hollins on Friday night by 8-1 scores before falling at Lynchburg, 8-1, on Saturday morning.
MATCH 1 (Oct. 1) : Covenant 8, Roanoke 1
Covenant was able to soundly defeat the host Maroons on Friday afternoon with a score of 8-1.
The Scots went up 2-1 in doubles play thanks to wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. The team of Lauren Carr and Nicole Restrepo finished off Margriet Bostoen and Julia Bassett, 8-3, at No. 2. That win was followed by a 8-0 victory over Sophie Bartholomaus and Dana Meyer by Kacey Melton and Dani Rappuhn.
The Scots continued their stellar play by going 6-0 in singles play.
At the No. 1 spot, Madelyn Savage topped Lucy Collins 6-4, 6-0, while Gillian Bosko defeated Halle Fernstrum 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2. In the No. 3 slot, Carr picked up her first collegiate singles victory in her 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Bostoen.
Restrepo [6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5)] and Melton [(6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4)] were both able to pick up tie-break wins in the fourth and fifth slots, while Alexis Baker took down Meyer 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 to round out the 8-1 Scots victory.
MATCH 2 (Oct. 1) : Covenant 8, Hollins 1
After defeating Roanoke, the Scots made the short drive to Hollins and took an 8-1 win late Friday night.
Covenant swept doubles play, including two shutouts, to grab a 3-0 match lead.
The No. 1 duo of Melton and Savage defeated Krishna Agrawal and Amelia Shaw, 8-2. Carr and Jessica Brown recorded their first collegiate doubles victory as a duo with an 8-0 win over Izzy Ingwerson and Carlia Kearney at the second flight. Jordan Lancaster and Anna Logan completed the sweep with an 8-0 win over Caroline Grace and Ava Kegler at No. 3.
From there, the Scots cruised through singles play, 5-1.
Savage bested Agrawal in No. 1 singles with a tie-break score of 4-6, 7-6 (10), 1-0 (10-7). At the No. 3 slot, Brown topped Kearney 6-0, 6-0, while Logan defeated Ingwerson 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 flight.
Jordan Lancaster then picked up her first collegiate singles win as she was able to top Ava Kegler 6-0, 6-0, sealing the 8-1 Covenant win.
MATCH 3 (Oct. 2) : Covenant 1, Lynchburg 8
On Saturday morning, Covenant fell to Lynchburg, 8-1, to conclude the trip.
The Hornets swept the doubles portion, going 3-0 over the Scots. Christina Harris and Alissa Anderson topped Savage and Bosko, 8-4. The teams of Carr and Restrepo, and Melton and Rappuhn were both beaten 8-1.
Covenant's lone point of the match came at No. 4 as Restrepo defeated Lauren Pascadlo by retirement 2-6, 6-4, WR.
