MCKENZIE, Tenn. -- The extended road trip for the Covenant women's basketball team came to a close with a 90-52 loss at NAIA-ranked No. 24 Bethel (Tenn.) on Monday night.
Covenant (0-6) has played all six regular season games, plus two exhibition contests, away from Lookout Mountain to begin the year. The Scots are slated to open the home season on Thursday vs. Birmingham Southern (3 p.m.).
Bethel (8-4), ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Top 25, made six 3-pointers in the first quarter to open up a double-digit lead and never looked back. It was the third all-time meeting between the programs.
Mary Elaine Mitchell scored nine points, with three 3-pointers, to lead the Scots. Cosette Kirsch had six points, while Karis McIntosh and Kora Dodson had five apiece. Ruthie Moore totaled five rebounds and three assists and Destiny Mergilles added five rebounds and three blocks.
Covenant hit seven 3-pointers on the night, led by Mitchell's three, and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line. The Scots made 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor.
Bethel placed three players in double-figure scoring led by Jani Crawford's game-high 26 points to go with eight rebounds. Mickey Head had 12 points and Millie Bryant 11 for the host Wildcats. Bethel ended the night with eight 3-pointers and shot 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the field and 20-of-29 at the foul line.
