MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team concluded an abbreviated season with a pair of losses at No. 17-ranked Berry on Thursday afternoon. The host Vikings defeated the Scots 10-2 in the opener before completing the sweep with an 8-0 win in the finale.
The losses wrap up the season for Covenant (2-10). Covenant has canceled all remaining spring athletic events out of an abundance of caution related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) that is currently sweeping the globe. For more information on Covenant's response, click here
GAME ONE: Berry 10, Covenant 2
Covenant scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but a seven-run third catapulted Berry to a 10-2 win in Thursday's opener.
The Scots produced four hits in the contest as Cope Whitaker, Faith Manning, Hannah Talley, and Shelby Ralston all had one apiece.
Berry, which is ranked No. 17 in the latest NFCA Top 25, took a 9-0 lead after three innings. The host Vikings scored seven runs in the third inning to break open the game.
In the fourth, Covenant scratched across a pair of runs. The Scots loaded the bases with two outs and Whitaker reached on an error that enabled both Ralston and Talley to come across and score. Talley had singled earlier in the inning and Ralston followed that with a double to open up the scoring chance for the Scots.
Sarah Huskey (0-4) made the start in the circle for Covenant and received the loss as she struck out three. Heather Long tossed 2.1 effective innings in relief.
Madison Morgan and Hannan Rezeq had three hits each for Berry, while Madison Hollis (5-0) got the win.
GAME TWO: Berry 8, Covenant 0
In the finale, Berry scored in four of the five innings and took an 8-0 win to complete the sweep.
Emma Giller and Talley combined for both of Covenant's hits in the game.
Berry scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to finish off the run-rule victory. Berry (10-2) received two hits and three RBIs from Bayleigh Masterson in the win.
Lauren Kierpa (1-3) and Huskey made appearances in the circle for the Scots. Lauren Baccari (3-1) got the win in the circle for Berry.
