Wagaman Posts Career High As Scots Fall To Berea

BEREA, Ky. -- The Covenant women's basketball team fell to Berea, 81-49, on Tuesday night from the Seabury Center.

Covenant falls to 8-13 overall and 5-7 in USA South action while Berea is now 21-2 and a perfect 14-0 in conference play.

The Mountaineers scored the opening six points and the Scots answered with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to two with 2:12 left in the opening frame. Berea responded with a six-point spurt to end the quarter up 12-6.

In the second period, Berea slowly stretched their lead until they went on an 8-0 run capped off by an Aaliyah Hampton 3-pointer to take a 33-16 advantage with 3:22 remaining in the half. Hampton then hit a shot at the buzzer to give the hosts a 21 point edge going into the halftime break.

Berea continued stretching their lead in the third outscoring the Scots 23-13 in the third frame. 

The Mountaineers continued to pour it on stretching their lead to the largest of the night at 36 on a Leah Parker layup with 3:25 left in the game. The Scots answered with a 7-3 run to end the game as they fell 81-49.

Hannah Monday paced the Scots with 17 points and was a rebound shy of completing the double-double to pace the team. 

Riley Wagaman chipped in with a career-high 11 points to go with three boards. Ruthie Moore had seven points and seven rebounds to go with a pair of assists and Elissa Moore led the team with four assists.

Hampton led all players with 24 points and Bailee Vanover had 17 of her own. Parker pitched in with 12 and Nakeisha Greene pulled down a game-high 20 boards. 

Berea outrebounded the Scots 51-38 including 17 points on 18 offensive boards.

Covenant was able to get the ball down low outscoring the hosts 36-26 in the paint.

Berea shot 40 percent (30-for-75) overall and went 15-for-42 (35.7 percent) from behind the 3-point line. The Mountaineers shot 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

Covenant was 22-for-61 (36.1 percent) from the floor but went a cold 2-for-12 (16.7 percent) from distance. The Scots were 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the charity stripe.

UP NEXT

The Scots return home on Friday to take on Huntingdon at 6 p.m.
