Scots Split DH With Emory

ATLANTA -- The Covenant baseball team split a doubleheader against Emory on Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park.

The Scots took game one, 3-2, before falling 20-8 in the series finale.

Covenant is now 6-4 on the season while Emory moves to 8-2.

GAME ONE: COVENANT 3, EMORY 2

CJ Edmond drew an RBI walk in the fifth and it proved to be enough as the Scots came away with a 3-2 victory in game one.

The Eagles struck first with an RBI double from Jake Kessinger in the bottom of the second and took advantage of an error in the same inning to hold a 2-0 lead.

The Scots answered evening things up just a half-inning later. Hunter Christian doubled in Brooks DuBose to cut the lead to one and evened things at two on a Brett Kernodle RBI double.

In the fifth Covenant used a pair of singles, and walks to score the game-winning run on the Edmond walk.

Andrew Cline (1-0) got the start on the mound and went six innings. Cline scattered three hits, allowing only two unearned runs while walking two and striking out to pick up the win. Conor Austin picked up his first save of the year going the final inning with one strikeout.

Christian and Kernodle both had 3-for-3 days with an RBI and a walk as Christian scored two runs to pace the offense.

Bryant Wise was the starting pitcher for Emory lasting three innings giving up four hits, two earned runs while walking six and striking out five. Joey Bock (1-1) was stuck with the loss going three innings and allowed one run on four hits and three walks.

Scot pitching limited the Eagle offense to just three hits by three different people in Jaco Singer, Michael Edelman, and Kessinger.

GAME TWO: EMORY 20, COVENANT 8

In-game number two Emory scored early and often jumping out to a 17-0 lead after two full innings of play.

Edelman got the Eagles on the board first with a two-run home run in the first. Jacob Greene hit the second Emory home run in the inning with a two-run shot of his own to take a 6-0 lead after one.

The Eagles then exploded for 11 runs in the second without the aid of the long ball. Henry Pelinski singled in what would prove to be the game-winning RBI in the inning.

The Scots slowly tried to climb back into it scoring five runs in the fourth through six innings to cut the lead to 12.

Covenant tacked on three more in the seventh but Emory scored twice in the bottom half to implement the mercy rule and win the contest 20-8.

Adam Carver (1-1) started on the mound for Covenant but could only get one out as he was chased out after allowing six runs on five hits. Harrison Richards proved to be effective in relief for the Scots going four innings allowing only three hits, one run, two walks, and struck out three batters.

Max Wilson and Carson Kindred both came off the bench and had 2-for-3 days as Kindred produced two RBIs. Kenny Mills was the only Covenant starter to have multiple hits going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

James Robertson (1-1) got the start for the Eagles going five innings. Robertson allowed three runs on four hits and two walks and struck out four batters.

Jack Rubenstein led the Emory offense going 5-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Greene led the offense with five RBIs going 3-for-3 and Edelman ended the contest going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
