LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's soccer team trailed for most of the match, then pulled ahead, but visiting Salem scored two goals in the final five minutes to defeat the Lady Scots, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
Covenant drops to 0-2-1 overall, while Salem is 2-1 on the year. Even though both teams are members of the USA South, the match does not count toward league standings.
In a back-and-forth contest, both teams created opportunities and capitalized.
Covenant trailed 3-2 with 22 minutes left, but Kyra Duble scored twice over the next 10 minutes of action to give the Lady Scots a 4-3 edge. In the 70th minute, Lizzy Hightower slid a pass into the box where Duble tracked it down and ripped her shot past Salem keeper Jordan Tomberlin to even the score at 3-3. In the 79th minute, Covenant took advantage of Tomberlin getting out of position and Duble scored from close range to make it 4-3.
It was the second two-goal match in Duble's career and gives her three scores on the season.
However, Salem would produce the final tallies. Madison Green collected her second goal of the match in the 86th minute to tie the score at 4-4 before Martha Santos flicked in a goal in the 89th minute giving Salem the victory. Ellie Montes, who finished the match with a goal and three assists, assisted both goals.
Salem took an early 2-0 lead with goals from Green and Montes in the first half. Covenant got on the board in the 42nd minute when Anna Robertson scored from near the post after a Hightower corner kick was deflected by Lydia Barton right to Robertson. The goal was Robertson's first of the year and her first since 2017.
Down 2-1 at the half, Covenant knotted up the score in the 61st minute. Grace Herring played a perfect service into the box where Hannah Rodehaver booted it into the back of the net. The goal was Rodehaver's first of the year.
Salem regained the lead in the 68th minute on an Amy Bounds score before the teams combined for four goals over the final 22 minutes of play.
Covenant out-shot Salem, 16-13, on the day. Addy Cronan and Kailey Burrell had four shots apiece, while Montes led the Spirits with five. Lucy Sandhoff had three saves for the Lady Scots and Tomberlin collected four for Salem.

Covenant will host Birmingham Southern in a non-conference match on Tuesday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
