Baseball Comeback Falls Short At Brevard

MARION, N.C. -- The Covenant baseball team was able to get the first two runners on in ninth but was unable to get anything across as their comeback fell just short, 5-4, to Brevard on Saturday afternoon at the Big League Camp Complex.

After Alex Gonzalez scored on a passed ball in the fourth Brevard (7-23, 2-19 USA South) rattled off five unanswered runs in their half of the fourth and fifth innings.

In the eighth, Gonzalez got things rolling with a lead-off double and Hunter Christain drew a one-out walk for Covenant (12-19, 5-13 USA South) to threaten. John Mitchell answered had a one-run single to cut the Tornado lead to three.

Brooks Dubose hit an RBI groundout to score Christian and Mitchell came around to score on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4.

Brevard threatened in the home half of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs, but reliever Adam Carver was able to escape the jam without conceding a run.

In the final inning of play, Lewis Saunders drew the leadoff pinch-hit walk and Tyler Moore singled to left, and advanced to second on an error to have runners on second and third with no outs. Matthew Scavotto then struck out the next three batters to pick up the save and give the Tornados the win.

The Scots were held to five hits in the contest, two by Gonzalez to pace the offense.

Andrew Cline (4-3) got the start on the hill and was stuck with the loss. Cline went five innings and allowed all eight hits, five runs (three earned) and struck out three. Carver came in three innings of relief work and did not allow hit while walking and striking out two.

Kross Robinson (1-6) picked up his first win of the year lasting 6.1 innings allowing two hits, one unearned run while striking out 10 batters. Kyle Williams went 1.1 allowing two hits but allowed three earned runs and two walks in relief. Scavotto picked up his first win of the season with one inning of work with just one hit and two strikeouts.

Christian Ezzell paced the Tornado offense with a 2-for-4 day and two RBIs. Ryan Roon had a 2-for-5 day and Matthew Kelley added 2 RBIs and a walk to his 1-for-3 day.
