Wood's Homer Caps Softball's Comeback Win

MARION, Ala. -- Cassee Wood hit a three-run, go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh inning in game two to cap the Covenant softball team's 6-5 win over Judson to secure a doubleheader split on Saturday.

Covenant (3-6) dropped the first game of the twin-bill, 4-0.

GAME TWO: Covenant 6, Judson 5

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh inning, Covenant scored five runs as Wood's home run gave the Scots the lead for good in a 6-5 victory.

Down by four in the seventh, Covenant got to work quickly as the first two batters reached before Erika Mast produced an RBI single that scored Faith Manning to make it 5-2. Cope Whitaker followed with an RBI single, plating Emma Giller, to draw the Scots within 5-3.

With one out and runners at the corners, Wood launched a three-run homer over the right field fence to give the Scots a 6-5 lead, their first lead of the day. The homer for Wood was the first of her career and the first Covenant home run of the season.

Lauren Kierpa then shut the door on Judson in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the comeback win. Kierpa (1-0) came on in relief and tossed 2.2 innings allowing one run on one hit to collect her first career win.

Judson (8-6) scored a run in the first and three in the fifth to go ahead 4-0. In the top of the sixth, Shelby Ralston got the Scots on the board with her two-out RBI single that scored Wood.

Sarah Huskey made the start in the circle for the Scots and allowed one earned run over 4.1 innings to go along with four strikeouts.

Wood finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Manning, Mast, and Whitaker all had two hits apiece as Covenant strung together 11 hits in the win.

Judson reliever Sarah Lippeatt (3-2) got the loss after going one inning. Carson Beatty went 3-for-3 with two runs for the host Eagles.

GAME ONE: Judson 4, Covenant 0

In game one, Judson used a four-run fifth inning to defeat Covenant, 4-0.

The Scots had six hits, but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities in the third and fourth innings. Whitaker went 2-for-3, while Gibbins, Giller, Carlin Labuzan, and Jada Allmon had tallied one hit each.

Judson scored all four runs in the fifth inning. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Taylor Hutto as her two-run home run to left-center field gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Carsyn Stone (1-4) made the start in the circle for Covenant and went 4.1 innings. Kierpa tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.

Hutto (4-2) went the distance in the circle as she scattered six hits, while striking out five. Kaley Patteson and Katie Glover had two hits each.
