Softball Takes One From Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. -- The Covenant softball team split a doubleheader with Brevard on Saturday afternoon on Ives-Lemel Field.

The Scots were able to take game one 2-1 before falling in game two 7-4.

Covenant is now 9-16 overall and an even 4-4 in USA South play. Brevard moved to 13-16 on the year, and 5-3 in the USA South.

GAME ONE: Covenant 2, Brevard 1

Carsyn Stone (3-9) went a complete game and held Brevard to three hits to secure the win for Covenant in game one.

Shelby Ralston put the first run on the board with an RBI double in the second to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Erika Mast added on in the third with a one-run single to extend the lead to two.

Stone had a no-hitter heading into the sixth before a Sara Lallier two-out double broke up the no-hitter bid. Emily White then singled her home for the lone Tornado run.

Stone went the complete game, scattering three hits in the final two innings, allowing just one run while striking out four and no walks.

Faith Manning went 3-for-4 in game one and Madalyn Ames had a 2-for-3 game.

Micayla McCoy (8-8) was stuck with the tough loss going all seven innings, allowing 10 hits, two runs, and struck out two.

GAME TWO: Brevard 7, Covenant 4

Brevard used a five-run fourth inning to take game two of the day from the Scots.

The tornados jumped on the board first with a two-run McCoy single in the first.

Covenant answered scoring three runs in the third to take the lead. Carlin Labuzan picked up a hard-earned RBI with a hit by pitch to score Ames. Mast reached on a fielders choice to score Aileen Hill just before Manning singled in Diana Muniz to take the 3-2 lead.

In the fourth, Hill tacked on one more with a sacrifice fly to score Shelby Ralston.

Brevard answered in the home half of the inning as Lallier hit an RBI single to cut the lead to one. A few batters later, with the bases loaded, McCoy launched a grand slam to give the Tornados the 7-4 victory.

The Scots struggled offensively as Manning and Mast were the only two able to get a hit with one each.

Lauren Kierpa (2-2) got the start and was chased out after 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, five runs, four walks, and striking out four in the loss.

McCoy paced the Brevard offense, going 2-for-3 with six RBIs and a home run. Emily White was the only other multi-hit tornado going 2-for-2.

Ali Grace Hartman started in the circle lasting 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on just one hit. Breanna Allen went the next two-thirds innings allowing a hit and a run. Kaitlynn Farmer (1-0) got credit for the win going an inning without allowing a hit or run.
