Eight-Run Third Inning Propels Scots over Sewanee

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Brooks DuBose and Tyler Moore both homered and the Covenant baseball team used an eight-run third inning to defeat Sewanee, 9-4, on Tuesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.

Covenant goes to 11-12 on the year, while Sewanee drops to 16-10. The teams split their regular season series as Sewanee won 12-7 on March 12.

The Scots sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored eight runs on five hits. Tommy Easley gave Covenant a 2-1 lead with his two-run triple down the line in right field that plated DuBose and Ken Alexander. With two outs, CJ Edmond delivered an RBI single to center field that plated Moore to make it 3-1. Two batters later, John Mitchell produced a two-run single to give the Scots a 5-1 lead.

Up for a second time in the inning, DuBose hit a mammoth three-run homer to left field to cap the eight-run outburst and give Covenant an 8-1 lead. The homer was DuBose's first of the season.

Solid pitching from the Covenant staff helped maintain the lead throughout. Adam Carver made his first start of the season and went three innings allowing one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts. Warner Adcock (1-0) collected his first career win after tossing two scoreless innings and retiring six of the seven hitters he faced.

Sewanee got within 8-4 with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. However, the Scots got a run back in the eighth inning when Moore led off the frame with a solo homer to left field. The home run was Moore's second of the year.

Matt Reitz came on in the ninth and threw a scoreless inning to shut the door on the Tigers.

DuBose finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, while Easley went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Covenant out-hit Sewanee 9-7 on the day.

Justin Lavender (1-2) made the start and received the loss for Sewanee after lasting 2.1 innings and allowing three earned runs. Braxton Swanson had three hits in four at-bats and Riley Brandvold drove in two runs.
