Baseball Powers Past Calvin

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team used three home runs to push past Calvin 8-2 on Wednesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.

Calvin (4-5) got on the board first with an Andrew Hung sacrifice fly to center field to score Quinn Hyndiuk who had reached on an error in the first at-bat of the game to take a 1-0 lead after the first.

Covenant (10-9) knotted things back up at one with an Alex Gonzalez solo shot to left field in the top of the fourth. A couple of batters later Hunter Christian hit his first collegiate home run to give the Scots a 3-1 lead.

After holding the Knights scoreless in the top of the fifth, the hosts were able to put up four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to score Brett Kernodle to extend the lead to three. The very next batter, CJ Edmond, hit a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Moore and Brooks DuBose ended the scoring with a two-run double to left center that went off the fence to extend the lead to six.

The Knights were able to push one more across in the seventh but the Scots answered with an Edmond home run to push the lead to 8-2. The home run was Edmond's third of the year.

Tyrique Wilmore got the start for the Scots going two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts. Ben Walsh (1-0) came in and got the win with two innings of work allowing just a hit and a strikeout.

Moore extended his hitting streak to 13 games going 1-for-4 on the day with a walk and a run. DuBose and Edmond both paced the Scots offense with a pair 2-for-3 days and two RBIs. Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Kernodle rounded out the multi-hit Scots going 2-for-5 on the day. Christian had two RBIs on the day thanks to a two-run shot.

Clay Franciso (1-2) was chased out after just 4.2 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits, two walks, and two home runs.

Ricky Padilla led the Knights with a 3-for-4 day with a walk drawn. The Scots pitching scattered five hits in the contest.
