Softball Drops DH To Nationally Ranked Berry

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team dropped their first two games of the season to nationally ranked Berry on Saturday afternoon 7-4 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

GAME ONE: Berry 7, Covenant 4

Erika Mast went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs despite the Scots falling 7-4 to 13th ranked Berry in game one.

Berry got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third via an error to score Mackenzie Flynt.

The Vikings were able to tack on two more in the top of fourth on a Madison Morgan RBI single and an Abby Gamble RBI double to left.

The Scots answered scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Cassee Wood singled to left field to bring home Cope Whitaker. Mast then hit her first double of the day plating Wood to cut the lead to one.

A few innings later Berry scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-2 lead.

Covenant answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half on a two-run double by Mast, but it was not enough as the Scots fell 7-4.

Carsyn Stone (0-1) got the start and loss going 6.1 innings allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned). Lulu Klecan finished out the game allowing two hits and two runs (one earned).

Whitaker was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk drawn.

Berry combined for 11 hits from nine different players. Katlin Seager and Madison Morgan were the only players with multiple hits.

Meredith Holland (1-0) went 6.2 innings scattering five hits, allowed three runs but walked five. Emily Schechter got the last out, but not before giving up two hits and a run.

GAME TWO: Berry 10, Covenant 0

Mast continued seeing the ball well going 2-for-3 at the plate. Madyson Gibbons recorded a 2-for-3 game as well.

Berry scored three runs in the fourth, three in the sixth, and recorded a four-run seventh in the win.

Sarah Huskey (0-1) lasted 5.2 innings allowing five runs while striking out four. Lauren Kierpa made her collegiate debut allowing only one earned run in 1.1 innings.

Berry recorded 15 hits in the contest and was led by Seager who went 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Flynt (1-0) went six innings allowing only six hits while striking out three. Emily Schechter went the final inning only giving up one hit.

UP NEXT

Covenant is scheduled to take on Birmingham on Tuesday in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
