Huskey's No-Hitter, Huge First Inning Highlights Softball Sweep of Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sarah Huskey threw a no-hitter in game two and the Covenant softball team used big innings to come away with a sweep of Sewanee on the road on Wednesday afternoon. Covenant took game one, 5-2, before Huskey shut down the host Tigers in a 12-0, five-inning win in the finale.

Huskey's no-hitter was the seventh in program history, and the first since 2017. It also marked just the second time that one pitcher has a completed a no-hitter, the first since 2013.

The victories for Covenant (2-3) were the first in the head coaching career of Brie Carmack.

GAME ONE: Covenant 5, Sewanee 2

Covenant got strong pitching from Carsyn Stone and Lauren Kierpa and the Scots used a pair of two-run innings to pull away for a 5-2 victory in the first game.

Stone went four-plus innings, allowing two runs on two hits, before giving way to Kierpa who tossed the final three innings to pick up the save. Stone (1-2) struck out three in her outing and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Kierpa was also in command out of the bullpen as she surrendered one hit with two strikeouts.

Covenant struck first via a Sewanee error in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. In the third, Jada Allmon and Erika Mast had RBI hits to extend the lead to 3-0.

Sewanee hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to slice the Scots' lead to 3-2. However, in the sixth Covenant got those runs back as Aileen Hill and Madyson Gibbins produced consecutive RBI doubles to make it 5-2.

Cope Whitaker, Mast, and Gibbins had two hits apiece as the Scots out-hit Sewanee 10-3.

Sewanee starter Kendell Goodrum (0-4) went seven innings and allowed two earned runs on 10 hits in the loss. Rachel Hoffman and Peri Prestwood both hit solo homers for the Tigers.

GAME TWO: Covenant 12, Sewanee 0

Huskey dominated in the circle and the Scots scored 11 runs in the top of the first to complete the sweep with a 12-0 victory.

Huskey (1-1) faced just one batter over the minimum in the five-inning contest. The right-hander needed only 45 pitches, 30 strikes, to get through the Sewanee lineup. Huskey retired the first 10 batters she faced before allowing the lone baserunner of the game for Sewanee. Huskey's final line included five strikeouts and one walk.

The Scots scored 11 runs in the first, all after two were out in the frame. With two outs and nobody on, Covenant proceeded to score 11 runs on nine hits and take advantage of four Sewanee errors. Mast had an RBI single that was followed by Hill's two-run single and a Shelby Ralston RBI double to make it 4-0. Whitaker also had an RBI single in the inning before Ralston capped the frame with a run-scoring single in her second at-bat.

Covenant tacked on a 12th run in the third inning on Gibbins' RBI single.

Hill went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Covenant 15-hit attack. Faith Manning, Whitaker, Mast, Ralston, and Gibbins all had two hits apiece in the victory.

Goodrum got the loss for Sewanee (0-6) in the circle as she went five innings.
