Women's Hoops Suffers First Loss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Covenant women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as Millsaps pulled away in the third quarter for a 70-52 win over the Scots in the Richard Dardenne Memorial Classic on Friday night inside Bill Battle Coliseum.

Covenant drops to 1-1 on the year, while Millsaps is also 1-1.

Margo Koby nearly had her second double-double of the season as she produced a team-high 11 points to go with nine rebounds. Cosette Kirsch added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Hannah Monday had six points and four boards. Rachel Thomas chipped in nine points off the bench.

Covenant trailed by just a point (15-14) at the end of the first quarter after shooting 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the field. After trailing 8-0 to start the game, the Scots went on an 11-1 scoring run over a four-and-a-half-minute stretch that was capped by an Elissa Moore layup with 3:02 remaining in the period. 

Millsaps started to pull away in the second quarter and took a double-digit lead in the period and led 34-24 at the break.

The third quarter saw separation as Millsaps went on a 16-4 scoring run to open the quarter to extend the lead to 50-28. The Majors' lead would grow to 27 midway through the fourth quarter.

Covenant finished the game shooting 31.7 percent (19-of-60) overall and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from 3-point land. Kirsch had two of Covenant's six treys on the night. The Scots had a 38-37 rebounding edge and totaled 14 offensive rebounds to account for eight second-chance points.

Millsaps was led by 20 points apiece from Dia Fortenberry and Taelor Manning, while Megan Donaldson had 12 points off the bench. The Majors shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the field but were limited to only 5-of-23 from deep. Manning added nine rebounds and Fortneberry collected eight in the win.

Covenant will conclude the weekend in Birmingham by facing host Birmingham Southern on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CST (3 p.m. EST).
