Men's Soccer Shuts Out Mary Baldwin, 4-0

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Covenant men's soccer team struck early and cruised to a seventh straight USA South victory in a 4-0 win at Mary Baldwin on Saturday afternoon at SMA Worth Field.

Covenant (10-1-1, 7-0 USA South) remains atop the USA South West Division with the victory. The Scots have won 12 straight regular season conference matches dating back to October 2018.

The Scots owned the first half as they built a 3-0 lead heading into the break. Jake Major opened the scoring in the 17th minute with his fifth goal of the year. Major collected a rebounded shot from Parker Owen and headed the ball into the net from close range to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Owen registered his second assist of the year on the play.

Less than three minutes later, Covenant was at it again. Jesse Riggs played a ball over the top and into the box where Keegan Weekley one-touched an attempt past Mary Baldwin keeper Obdulio Argueta for the score. The goal was Weekley's second of the season and Riggs' fourth helper on the year.

The Scots capped the first half scoring in the 34th minute as Austin Berry found Griffin Felton inside the box and Felton produced his first goal of the year.

Covenant tacked on one more score in the 54th minute as Riggs delivered a penalty kick for his third goal of the year, and his second converted penalty kick chance.

The Scots' defense stifled Mary Baldwin (6-7, 3-5 USA South) all match long. It was the sixth shutout of the year for Covenant, and also marked the fifth match the Scots have scored four or more goals. Covenant held a 16-8 margin in shots attempted. Major led all players with three shots.

Paul Lemay recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season as he made one save in 90 minutes of action. Argueta made six saves for the host Fighting Squirrels, who are in their first year of intercollegiate men's soccer.
