Scots Extend Streak as Spragg Joins 1,000 Point Club

By: Hannah Harris/Sports Information

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Bailey Spragg hit the 1,000 career point mark and the Covenant men's basketball team used a big first half run to take a 72-55 win over Brevard on Friday night in Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (12-6, 11-0 USA South) extended its win streak to seven and remains unbeaten in the conference. The Scots are the first USA South team to start the conference season 11-0 since the 2013-14 season when Maryville accomplished the feat.

Spragg put up 12 points on the night to make him the 28th player in Covenant's history to join the 1,000 point club. Spragg also contributed three steals and seven assists.

Three other Scots posted double-digit points with Will Crumly leading the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. James Mitchell had 12 points and three steals, while Noah Oetjen added 11 points, five assists, six rebounds, and four steals. Mitchell Hollis contributed nine points.

The Scots used a strong first half, including a significant 30-2 scoring run, to hold the lead for over 37 minutes of the night.

The game stayed tight for the first seven minutes with an 11-11 score until the Scots took the lead for good on a Mitchell 3-pointer at the 12:50 mark. Over the next six minutes, Covenant would put up 25 unanswered points to make it 36-11.

The Scots hit nine 3-pointers in the first half, six of which came during the run. Oetjen scored all 11 of his points on the night during the stretch. Spragg's 1,000th point also came during the streak on a 3-pointer at 8:51, widening the gap to 17.

A Crumly layup capped the run at 36-11 with just under seven minutes left in the half. During the run, Brevard was held scoreless for over seven minutes.

Covenant's largest lead of the game, 27 points, came on a Mitchell 3-pointer at 2:26 and a 43-16 score. Covenant had a 44-22 lead at the half after shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 60 percent from deep.

In the second half, another Mitchell 3-pointer widened the gap to 27 points, making it 53-26. Covenant maintained a lead of at least 14 points for the remainder of the game.

Covenant connected on 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the field with 11 3-pointers. The Scots scored 24 points off 18 Brevard turnovers.

Brevard (5-13, 2-9 USA South) shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the floor. The Tornados were led by Demari Hopper's 12 points and seven rebounds, while Levi Lamb added 11 points.
