MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- The Covenant men's soccer team used a first half penalty kick goal from Jesse Riggs and a stout defensive effort to shutout Pfeiffer, 1-0, in a USA South match on Saturday afternoon in Misenheimer.

Covenant goes to 7-3-1 on the year and 4-1-1 inside the USA South with the win. Pfeiffer drops to 3-5 overall and 0-4 in league play. The match was Covenant's first in a week after having Wednesday's home contest with LaGrange postponed.

The lone goal of the contest came late in the first half. Riggs won the ball on the defensive half of the field for the Scots and quickly played it up the sideline. The Scots worked it into the box when a Covenant player and Pfeiffer defender collided resulting in a foul. Riggs stepped up and converted on the penalty chance to give the Scots a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.

It was Riggs' fifth goal of the year and his third successful penalty of the season (3-for-3). Riggs' five goals leads Covenant.

Neither team got much going offensively throughout the contest. Pfeiffer outshot the Scots 12-9, but Covenant keeper Paul Lemay made two saves to preserve the shutout. The clean sheet was Lemay's third of the year, and second in the last three matches for the Scots.

Jake Major, Carl Simakoff, and Parker Owen had two shots apiece for Covenant. Pfeiffer keeper David Chavarria made one save on two shots on goal.

The teams combined for 26 fouls, with Pfeiffer getting cautioned three times.

Covenant will go out of conference when the Scots host Berry on Tuesday at Scotland Yard. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
