Volleyball Suffers Two Defeats at Emory Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team wrapped up the Emory Classic on Saturday with a pair of losses. The Scots were defeated by Texas-Tyler, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-10), before falling to No. 5-ranked Emory by a 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-20) score.

Covenant falls to 0-3 on the year with the defeats.

Against Texas-Tyler, Covenant had a tough time getting a consistent attack going while the Patriots hit .312 as a team with 43 kills for the match. Alexa Spurling had five kills to lead the Scots and Olivia Sanders had 10 assists. Hannah Stewart led the defense with 10 digs and Allie Jakes registered three total blocks.

Covenant gained a 6-3 lead in the first set after a Lindsey Stephens kill, but Texas-Tyler answered with a 7-2 run to go ahead 10-8. The Patriots would not trail again and pulled away for the set win. In fact, Texas-Tyler would not trail again in the match as the Patriots seized control to take the three-set victory.

Kaitlyn Budisalovich led all players with 13 kills while Reighanna Guzman had 25 assists for Texas-Tyler (4-0).

In the match against nationally-ranked Emory, the host Eagles stormed out to a big lead in the first set and never looked back to take a three-set victory over the Scots. 

Emory had 42 kills as a team and hit at a .412 clip in the victory.

Sara Delk had eight kills to lead the Scots, while Sophie Puertas had eight assists and Sanders added six. 

Down 2-0 in the match, Covenant made a game of it in the third set. The Scots trailed 18-10 in the frame, but rattled off a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 20-19. Emily Moore had consecutive aces during the stretch and Delk had a kill before two Emory errors got Covenant within one point. Emory would respond and finish the match by scoring the final three points for the win.

Tara Martin had nine kills for Emory (2-1) and Mady Arles had 29 assists. Elyse Thompson totaled 10 digs.

Covenant will travel to region foe Sewanee on Tuesday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EDT.
