Scots Claim Weather-Shortened Win over Brevard

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Rain and cold weather across the area wreaked havoc on the Covenant baseball team's weekend series with Brevard. When the teams were final able to play on Saturday, the Scots scored in each inning and took an 8-3, five-inning, victory over the visiting Tornados.

Trying to resume Friday's series opener on Saturday, the teams waited out a 2-plus hour fog delay before playing into the bottom of the fifth when the rain and fog moved back in. The teams waited around for about 10 minutes before the official announcement to end the game, and the series, was made.

Covenant moves to 11-21 overall, while Brevard drops to 6-22.

The Scots trailed 3-2 entering Saturday, but tied the game two batters into the day. Devin Cerrato doubled down the line in left to score Christian Murray and tie the game.

Covenant then took the lead for good in the third inning on a Murray two-run homer to left field to make it 5-3. The home run for Murray was his second of the year, with both coming at home.

In the fourth, the Scots took advantage of two Brevard errors to score three runs. Cerrato led off with a triple and scored on a Tyler Moore RBI fielder's choice. Moore's fielder's choice led to a Brevard throwing error that also enabled Caleb Bloye to score from second. Jonah Carignan followed and reached on another Brevard throwing error and Moore was able to score from second to give the Scots an 8-3 lead.

Matt Reitz entered in the third for the Scots on the mound and dominated. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out six in his three innings of work to pick up the win. Reitz (4-3) threw 41 pitches, 36 of which were in the zone.

In Friday's portion of the game, Brevard grabbed a 3-1 lead after an inning and a half. Jadon Wooten went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Ryan Roon was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Tyler Timms (2-5) got the loss for Brevard as he went four innings, including returning to the mound on Saturday.

Cerrato was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for the Scots and Murray went 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs. Bloye and Daniel Johnson each had RBI singles on Friday, while Joel Johnson, John Mitchell, and Carignan all had a hit apiece in the contest.
