MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant baseball team nearly came back from a big deficit in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Huntingdon, but the host Hawks held on for a 10-8 victory before completing the three-game sweep of the Scots with a 5-2 win in the finale.
Covenant drops to 9-20 on the year and 7-10 in the USA South. Huntingdon goes to 15-16 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
The Scots trailed 10-0 in the first game, but cut the deficit to 10-8 with five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Covenant had runners on second and third, representing the tying runs, with two outs in the eighth inning but Huntingdon reliever John Crawford got out of the jam.
Caleb Bloye went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Scots in game one. Six other Scots had a hit apiece. Jonah Carginan had a two-run single in his only at-bat of the game.
Matt Reitz (3-3) got the loss on the mound for Covenant. Huntingdon starter Jared McFall (2-1) got the win as he went six innings. Crawford picked up the save for the Hawks.
In game two, Covenant had difficulty solving Huntingdon starter Brooks Freeman. Freeman (3-3) threw a complete-game and allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Daniel Johnson's RBI single that scored CJ Edmond. Huntingdon answered with single runs in the second and third inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Hawks would also score a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 4-1.
Covenant got within 4-2 in the eighth when Donny Lewis' sacrifice fly scored John Mitchell. However, Huntingdon would add an insurance run in the home half of the inning and Freeman completed his gem in the ninth to complete the series sweep.
Devin Cerrato, Trenton Nobles, Joel Johnson, and Daniel Johnson all had a hit apiece for the Scots at the plate. Drew Bradley (1-6) went 6.2 innings in his start and struck out four.

Covenant will return home on Tuesday to face Sewanee. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
