Baseball Blanked at Sewanee; Weekend Series Altered

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team struggled at the plate as host Sewanee shut out the Scots, 8-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Montgomery Field.

The loss is the fifth straight for Covenant (7-12). Sewanee (5-12) has won four straight overall.

Before the game, it was announced that this weekend's USA South series against Averett would be adjusted due to potential inclement weather. The Scots and Cougars have moved their Saturday doubleheader to Thursday starting at 12 p.m. The series will now conclude with Friday's scheduled game at 3 p.m.

On Tuesday, Sewanee jumped out on the Scots with three runs in the first and another in the second to build a 4-0 lead. A pair of RBI singles in the first after a Covenant throwing error allowed the host Tigers to score three runs and take a 3-0 lead. In the second, an RBI double from Trey Akins made it 4-0.

Covenant was stifled at the plate by Sewanee starter Justin Lavender. The Scots managed just three hits off Lavender in eight innings and placed a runner in scoring position once during those frames. Covenant had runners at first and third with two outs in the fourth after Joel Johnson walked and Trenton Nobles singled, but Lavender worked out of the jam to keep the 4-0 lead for the Tigers.

Sewanee added two runs in the fifth inning and single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the final tally.

Caleb Bloye had two of Covenant's five hits on the day, while Nobles and Eli Wilborn had one apiece. Reily Martin collected his first collegiate hit with a single in the ninth inning.

Lavender (1-1) got the win for Sewanee allowing three hits over eight innings with two strikeouts. Covenant got two hits off reliever Drew Mancuso in the ninth, but could not break through.

Tristen Green (0-2) picked up the loss for Covenant as the Scots used five pitchers in the mid-week game. Ross Skipper and Jackson Heuer threw consecutive shutout innings to keep the Scots within striking distance.

Mancuso had three hits in five at-bats with an RBI for Sewanee, while Jared Demkowicz went 2-for-5 with three runs and a home run. Akins also had two hits to go with two runs and an RBI.
