Softball Suffers Defeats at Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team suffered two more losses on Tuesday as the Lady Scots were defeated 15-0 and 9-1 by region power Berry.

The losses drops Covenant to 0-6 on the year. Berry, a NCAA Tournament qualifier last season, goes to 2-0.

In the first game, Berry scored all 15 runs within the first three innings to take the five-inning victory. Berry starter Kassie Howard (1-0), a NFCA National Player of the Year watch list honoree, held Covenant without a hit in her three innings of work while striking out six to get the win.

Covenant's lone hit of game one came from Casey Grover as she singled to leadoff the fourth inning. Shannon Schmitt followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out, but Covenant would not be able to capitalize on the opportunity to get on the board.

Berry scored four runs in the first, three in the second and then eight in the third. Brittany Tuttle went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Lauren Evans hit a three-run homer for the host Vikings. Carsyn Stone (0-3) got the loss for Covenant in the circle.

In the second game, Berry scored first but Covenant answered with a run in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1. Schmitt singled to start the frame and the Lady Scots loaded the bases later after a Shade Epes walk and a Madalyn Ames infield single. Jami Johnson delivered an RBI single to score Schmitt and knot the contest.

However, Berry responded with two runs in its half of the second, aided by a solo homer off the bat of Kayla Sangrey, and then two more runs in the third to make it 5-1. The Vikings ended the game in the sixth with four runs.

Five players had a hit for Covenant as Faith Manning, Schmitt, Epes, Ames, and Johnson all had one apiece. Tyler Epes (0-2) went three innings in her start and Sarah Huskey went the final 2.2 innings.
