Strong Pitching Not Enough in Softball Losses at Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Strong pitching from the Covenant softball team was not enough on Saturday as perennial national power Emory squeezed past the Lady Scots in both games of the doubleheader. Emory took game one 5-1 before completing the sweep with a 2-0 victory in game two.

Covenant drops to 6-10 on the year, while Emory goes to 6-2.

In game one, Sarah Huskey made the start and relievers Joni Johnson and Tyler Epes combined to allow one earned run on seven hits. Huskey (2-1) went the first 4.2 innings and scattered five hits with one strikeout, but picked up the loss.

Covenant grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jada Allmon singled home pinch-runner Carsyn Stone with two away. Emory responded with a run in its half of the fourth, but then busted the game open with four runs in the fifth. In the fifth, Emory got the first two batters to reach on consecutive fielding errors and the host Eagles were able to capitalize and score four times to take a 5-1 lead.

The Lady Scots would not be able to mount a comeback attempt as Emory used three pitchers to hold Covenant to a single hit. Jacqueline Spizizen (4-1) got the win as she threw three innings and struck out six.

In game two, Stone (2-5) went six innings in the circle for Covenant and surrendered just two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Emory scored both runs in the fourth inning when Natalie Arreguin's sacrifice bunt enabled a pair of runs to come across.

Covenant had four hits in the game, led by Carlin Labuzan's two. Casey Grover and Shelby Ralston had one apiece.

Emory's Audrey Walker (1-0) went 5.2 innings and received the game two victory, while Spizizen notched the save after tossing 1.1 hitless innings.
