Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Suffers Loss at Mary Hardin-Baylor

BELTON, Texas -- Will Crumly posted a double-double of 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, but the Covenant men's basketball team could not overcome cold shooting in a 77-64 loss at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday in the Cru Holiday Classic.

The loss snapped a five-game, regular season, win streak for Covenant (5-4). Mary Hardin-Baylor improves to 11-1 on the year.

Crumly was 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 at the free throw line for his team-best 16 points, while collecting a career-high 13 rebounds to go with two assists. However, outside of Crumly the Scots struggled to find the range. Covenant connected on 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the field and 24.4 percent (10-of-41) from deep. The field goal percentage and the 64 points are the second-lowest outputs of the season.

Despite the struggles, the Scots climbed to within striking distance with eight minutes left in the second half. Down 47-32 at the 16:25 mark of the second half, the Scots outscored the host Cru 19-8 over the next eight minutes to get within four (55-51) with 8:25 remaining. Crumly had six points during the stretch, while Daevon Platt buried a pair of 3-pointers to get the Scots back into the game.

A quick, 6-0 run by Mary Hardin-Baylor extended its lead back to 10 and Covenant could only get as close as eight the rest of the way.

James Mitchell had nine points for Covenant, while Mitchell Hollis, Bailey Spragg, and Platt had eight apiece. Spragg added eight assists and five rebounds, and Platt's point total was a career-high.

Mary Hardin-Baylor took a 40-29 lead at halftime after shooting 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the floor. Covenant took a 3-0 lead early on after a Mitchell 3-pointer, but the Cru went on an 8-0 run that would give them a lead they would not relinquish.

Sam Moore had 17 points to lead Mary Hardin-Baylor, while Byrale Carter had 16 points and seven rebounds. Brian Long (13 points) and Shaq Miller (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Cru. The hosts finished the night shooting 46.7 percent (28-of-60) and went 18-of-24 at the free throw line.
