Burrell's Two Goals Lift Women's Soccer over Salem and into Semifinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Kailey Burrell scored two goals and the Covenant women's soccer team is head to the USA South Tournament semifinals after taking down No. 2 East seed Salem, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 3 West seeded Covenant (11-7-1) will travel to Greensboro, N.C., on Friday, Nov. 2 for the semifinal round and face No. 1 West seed Maryville. Match time is set for 3 p.m. on the campus of Greensboro College.

In a tight contest, it was Burrell's strikes that were the difference. The freshman, named USA South Rookie of the Year on Friday, collected her third two-goal match of the year in the process and has 10 goals on the year.

Burrell's first goal came early in the first half. Hannah King slotted a pass to Burrell, who got a shot past Salem keeper Hannah Wagner for a goal in the fifth minute of action. It was Burrell again in the 60th minute as she beat Wagner on a one-on-one opportunity to give the Lady Scots a 2-0 lead.

The Covenant defense stymied the Salem attack as the Lady Scots recorded their eighth shutout of the year, and the third straight. Rachel Lemay, named USA South Goalkeeper of the Year on Friday, made five saves in the victory. Salem had two attempts in the final 10 minutes, but Lemay made a save on Ellie Montes' shot in the 85th minute and Courtney Chaplin's shot went high in the 88th minute.

Covenant held a slim, 12-11 edge in total shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Burrell led Covenant with three shots, while Addy Cronan added a pair of attempts.

Wagner finished with five saves in the loss for Salem (7-12).

Covenant will face a Maryville team on Friday that defeated Meredith 5-1 on Saturday. The two teams played in the regular season with Maryville taking a 2-0 win on its home field on Oct. 3.
