Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huntingdon Holds Off Women's Hoops, 58-55

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant women’s basketball team's strong fourth quarter comeback was not enough to help snap a three-game losing streak as the Scots fell 58-55 at Huntingdon in USA South action on Friday night.

With Covenant (5-9, 1-4 USA South) trailing 54-50, Kaley Hallmark was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 27 seconds to go and drained all three free throws, cutting the Hawks' lead to 54-53. After Huntingdon’s Hannah Parks made two free throws to put Huntingdon up 56-53, the Scots' Taylor Robinson was fouled on her 3-point attempt but made just 2-of-3 at the line with seven seconds to go to cut the Covenant deficit to 56-55.

On the ensuing possession, Huntingdon’s Alex Lowery knocked down two free throws to seal the game for the Hawks as Covenant would not be able to take a shot at tying the contest in the final seconds.

It was the second meeting between the two teams in an eight-day span. Huntingdon also came away with a one-possession victory at Covenant, 70-68, on Jan. 4.

A high number of turnovers for both teams was a major storyline in the game. While the Scots and Hawks had 18 and 15 turnovers, respectively, Huntington was able to outscore Covenant 19-10 on those giveaways. It was also a tough challenge to get the ball in the basket for both teams. Covenant mustered a 27 percent mark (17-of-63) from the field while Huntingdon shot 34.4 percent (22-of-64).

The Scots were unable to find an answer for Huntingdon’s leader scorer Juliette Harp. She came into the game averaging 17.4 points per game, good for sixth overall in the conference, and was able to continue her scoring tear as she posted 20 points while grabbing 14 rebounds on the night. Hannah Parks added 10 points for Huntingdon (11-5, 4-2 USA South).

In addition to making crucial free throws late, Hallmark was a key contributor for the Scots’ offense, leading the way with 14 points. She also grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists, and stole the ball twice. Joanna Smith also was a key contributor, recording her fifth double-double of the year with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds for the Scots. Smith also made all four of her free throw attempts and recorded a block in the contest.

Emma Grimes posted nine points, with three 3-pointers, to go along with seven rebounds and an assist on the night. Bekah Walter also picked up six points, three rebounds and a steal.
