Six-Run Seventh Propels Baseball over Huntingdon

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team used a six-run seventh inning, capped off by Alex Kerr's grand slam, to top Huntingdon 9-4 in the first game of the USA South series on Friday afternoon.

The Scots are now 11-16 overall and 4-9 in conference play. Huntingdon drops to 9-19 on the year and 6-7 in league play.

Covenant trailed the visiting Hawks 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh after Huntingdon hit two solo homers in the top of the frame. The Scots answered as Caleb Bloye and Forrest Hunter both picked up RBI hits to put Covenant ahead 5-4. Kerr then followed with the bases loaded and cranked out a towering shot over the left field fence to give the Scots a 9-4 lead that they never gave up. The homer was Kerr's third of the year and he finished with five RBIs on the day.

Early on, the Hawks took the lead quickly scoring two unearned runs in the top of the first after three errors by the Covenant infield. The Scots answered back in the bottom of the third with a pair runs coming on an RBI double by Christian Murray and an RBI single by Luke Harvey to tie the score at 2-2.

The next two innings were uneventful then in the bottom of the sixth Covenant took the lead after Kerr drove in a run on a single to right field. In the top of the seventh, the Hawks hit two home runs to retake the lead with a score of 4-3.

Matt Reitz started on the mound for the Scots, going 6.2 innings and striking out six batters. Ross Skipper (2-1) came in for Reitz in the top of the seventh, allowing only two hits and earning the win.

Luke Harvey, Bloye, Hunter, Kerr and Murray each had two hits in the win as the Scots out-hit Huntingdon 14-10.

For the Hawks, Zach McGrady (3-6) started and picked up the loss as he allowed six earned runs on 13 hits. Taylor Fought and Corey Lowe both homered for the Hawks. Fought and Joseph Calvert each went 3-for-5 at the plate.
