Softball Cruises Past Agnes Scott for DH Sweep

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team fought through a cold and wet day to cruise past Agnes Scott in a doubleheader sweep on Monday afternoon. Covenant took game on 9-2 and the second game 14-6 in five innings.

Covenant (12-6, 6-2 USA South) has won or split each of its first four USA South doubleheaders on the year. The Lady Scots have won eight of their last 10 games overall and are now tied for first in the USA South West Division with Maryville.

GAME ONE: Covenant 9, Agnes Scott 2

Madalyn Ames, Shannon Schmitt and Casey Grover all had two hits each to lead Covenant to a 9-2 win in Monday's opener.

The Lady Scots scored two runs in the first and then added to their lead in the later innings. Ames led off the first with a single and Schmitt would later hit a triple to drive in Ames for the game's first run. Two batters later Grover followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

After Agnes Scott scored two in the third, both coming on a Nicole Gilkeson home run, Covenant regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Schmitt singled home Madyson Gibbins and then Erika Mast singled down the left field line that plated Schmitt for a 4-2 lead. Covenant added three more in the fourth on a Kat Andrews bases loaded walk followed by a Jordan Brett RBI fielder's choice and Grover's RBI single for a 7-2 lead.

In the sixth, Covenant capped the scoring with Megan Wardlaw's RBI ground out and a wild pitch that enabled Kirsten Aanensen to score from third.

Tyler Epes (3-1) went four innings in her start and picked up the win as she allowed two runs on seven hits. Joni Johnson notched her first save of the season by going the final three innings and surrendering just two hits.

Schmitt and Grover each had two RBIs, while Schmitt scored three runs for Covenant. Ames added two runs scored. Covenant out-hit Agnes Scott 11-9.

Gilkeson (0-4) got the loss in the circle for Agnes Scott despite her home run. The right-hander allowed seven earned runs in six innings of work.

GAME TWO: Covenant 14, Agnes Scott 6

In the second game it was a 10-run third inning and enabled Covenant to surge ahead and take a 14-6 victory in five innings to complete the sweep.

Agnes Scott scored four runs in the first and led 4-0 entering the bottom of the second. But Covenant got the bats going to score four runs in the inning and tie the score. Grover and Shade Epes singled early in the frame and Jami Johnson reached on an error that plated Grover for the first run. A wild pitch allowed Epes to score before Ames produced an RBI ground out and Gibbins an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 4-4.

In the third, Covenant sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on five hits to break open the game and take a 14-4 lead. Johnon, Ames and Gibbins all drew bases loaded walks in the inning, while Schmitt had an RBI single. The big hits came from Brett and Mast as Brett cleared the bases with a three-run double and Mast followed with a two-run double in the 10-run inning.

Starting pitcher Sarah Huskey (3-0) got the win as she went 3.2 innings. Joni Johnson tossed the final 1.1 scoreless innings. Brett, who saw her 11-game hitting streak end in the first game, went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs. Ames and Gibbins had a hit and two RBIs apiece, while Mast was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
