Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday as the Scots fell 86-48 at Oglethorpe inside Dorough Field House in Atlanta.

Covenant drops to 1-1 on the year. It was the season opener for Oglethorpe (1-0).

Bekah Walter again led the way in the scoring column for Covenant with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Joanna Smith just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Emma Grimes also had nine points, all coming via the 3-pointer, and Taylor Robinson made her Covenant debut with six points and two assists in a reserve role.

The Scots shot 44.7 percent (17-of-38) from the field, but turnovers proved to be costly and could not be overcome. Oglethorpe was able to score 30 points off 35 Covenant turnovers in the contest and also tallied 28 second-chance points. The host Stormy Petrels held a 43-32 rebounding edge, with 22 offensive boards.

Covenant took an early lead as Grimes knocked down a 3-pointer in the first 30 seconds of the contest, but Oglethorpe went on an 8-0 run over the next two-plus minutes to grab an 8-3 lead. The Stormy Petrels would never trail again the rest of the way.

Despite shooting 50 percent in the opening quarter, Covenant found itself down 18-14 entering the second. Oglethorpe asserted itself in the second and outscored Covenant 21-9 in the period to go ahead 39-23 at halftime.

The Scots shot the ball better in the third period (57.1 percent), but Oglethorpe was able to extend the lead to 24 at the end of the quarter at 64-40. The Stormy Petrels continued to up the margin in the fourth to seal the win.

Three players scored in double figures to lead the balanced Oglethorpe effort. Sydney Long had 14 points off the bench, while Jada Triplett had 12 and Savannah LeGate 10. The Stormy Petrels shot 38 percent (30-of-79) from the field and made 12 3-pointers on the night.
