On to the Semifinals: Volleyball Sweeps Huntingdon in USA South Quarterfinals

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The No. 1 seeded Covenant volleyball team is back in the USA South Tournament semifinals for a fourth time in the last five years after sweeping No. 5 seed Huntingdon 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) in the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (22-7) moves on and will face No. 2 East seed William Peace on Friday, Nov. 3 in Danville, Va., at 4 p.m.

The Lady Scots also extended their program-record winning streak to 14 with the victory. Additionally, Covenant closed out a perfect season at home, the first on record in program history, after going 11-0.

After falling in the quarterfinal round a year ago at home, Covenant made sure that did not happen again. The Lady Scots used a 12-2 run in the first set to break open a tight score and went ahead 21-11 on back-to-back kills from Jessica Seehorn before cruising to the set win. In the second, Covenant led for the majority of the set and then ended the game on a 9-2 run, capped by kills from Allie Jakes and Schuyler Moore to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.

Covenant had 14 kills in each of the first two sets, while holding Huntingdon (19-18) to 15 combined kills to that point.

The Lady Scots used another strong surge in the third to build a seven-point lead at 21-14 after a Chloe Storm kill. The visiting Hawks would trim the lead to 23-21, but a kill from Hannah Harris followed by a Huntingdon attack error would give Covenant the set and the match.

Seehorn and Ginny Moore had 10 kills each, while Moore had 16 digs and Seehorn tallied eight digs. Seehorn led the team in hitting percentage at .400. Jakes added seven kills, while hitting .375, and Storm had six. Schuyler Moore tallied 33 assists, eight digs and five kills. Emily Moore led all players with 17 digs.

Huntingdon, which gained a spot in the quarterfinal after knocking off No. 4 seed LaGrange 3-1 earlier in the evening, was led by Amy Tyma's eight kills and two block assists. Kaitlyn Carter and Devyn Stringer had 11 assists each, while Carter and Bria Rochelle had nine digs apiece.

Covenant held a sizeable 41-25 edge in total kills and hit .223 as a team. The Lady Scots also out-dug Huntingdon 61-52 and produced five service aces.
