Fourth Quarter Push Falls Short in Women's Hoops Loss

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team outscored visiting Huntingdon in the fourth quarter and had chances to tie or take the lead late, but could not overcome the Hawks in a 60-58 USA South loss on Friday night at Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (8-9, 2-5 USA South) trailed by 10 in the final seconds of the third quarter, but would go on a 12-1 scoring run to take a 53-52 lead after a 3-pointer from Aleigha Williams with 7:20 left in the fourth. Huntingdon regained the lead on a Juliette Harp layup to make it 55-53 with 4:04 left and the Hawks would extend that margin to five at 60-55 with 1:31 remaining.

But Covenant would not go away as Kaley Hallmark drained a 3-pointer to cut the Huntingdon lead to 60-58 with 1:13 remaining. The Scots forced a turnover on the next Huntingdon possession, but would not be able to capitalize on the chance to tie or take the lead with 31 seconds left. However, Huntingdon left the door open for the Scots by missing the next six free throw attempts spanning three possessions.

The Scots had one last chance in the final six seconds after a Huntingdon missed free throw, but Williams' runner in the lane was blocked by Harp as time expired.

Joanna Smith led the Scots with 17 points to go with five rebounds, while Williams had 16 points, three rebounds and two steals. Emma Grimes scored nine points with four assists and Rachel Price collected 11 rebounds.

Harp produced a double-double for Huntingdon (14-4, 6-2 USA South) with 25 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Jello Weatherspoon was also in double figures with 10 points and Maia Hill dished out four assists.

Covenant shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52) for the game and went 12-of-18 from the free throw line. Huntingdon was limited to 39.7 percent (25-of-63) shooting and the Hawks were just 7-of-20 at the free throw line.
