Women's Basketball Outlasts Wesleyan Behind Smith, Patrick

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Joanna Smith tied a career-high with 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, while Kate Patrick set a career-best with 17 points to lead the Covenant women's basketball team to a 73-60 victory over Wesleyan in non-conference action on Wednesday night.

The victory is the third straight for the Scots and gives the program a 10-14 record on the year. The Scots also completed a season sweep of Wesleyan (2-16) in the process.

Playing a second game in less than 24 hours, Covenant had to show its strength in the second half to pull away from the visiting Wolves. Covenant broke open a 32-32 tie at halftime with a 19-9 edge in the third period to take a 51-41 lead heading into the fourth.

The lead continued to grow in the final period as Covenant took a 16-point lead at 61-45 after a pair of Smith free throws with 7:02 remaining. Wesleyan would trim the lead to single digits at 67-58 with two minutes left, but consecutive baskets from Aleigha Williams and Smith upped the lead to 13 as Covenant took the win.

Jessica Bell and Bekah Walter had nine points apiece for Covenant, while Williams had seven points, five assists and three steals. Rachel Price contributed six points, six rebounds and four steals in the victory.

Covenant shot 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the field and held a 47-38 rebounding edge. The Scots turned 21 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points on the night.

Three players scored in double figures for Wesleyan led by Taylor Thigpen's 18 points. Myra Patrick registered a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Alyssa Whitford had 10 points. The Wolves connected on 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the floor and were 16-of-16 from the foul line.
