CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's tennis team got its spring season going on Saturday, but visiting Birmingham Southern took several close matches for a 9-0 victory at the Racquet Club of Chattanooga.
Covenant drops to 1-1 overall, while Birmingham Southern remains perfect at 2-0.
In doubles play, Covenant hung with its regional foe but the Panthers took all three matches. Claire Luger and Gracie Smith nearly took a point at No. 2, but fell 9-7 as the Lady Scots fell behind 3-0 heading into singles play.
Smith was also close in singles play at the No. 4 spot. The junior took Mary Evelyn Carroll into three sets before losing 7-6, 2-6, 10-7. Luger dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 3 to Isabella Wisener, while Aly Hall fell 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot to Carlee Petro.
