Late Run Not Enough in Women's Basketball Loss to Oglethorpe

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team went on a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but visiting Oglethorpe responded to take a 55-49 win over the Scots in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

The loss is the first of the year for Covenant (4-1), while Oglethorpe moves to 5-3 for the season.

Rachel Price and Joanna Smith both narrowly missed double-doubles with 10 points and nine rebounds apiece. Smith also dished out a team-best three assists to go along with two blocks and two steals. Aleigha Williams added nine points and five rebounds and Kaley Hallmark recorded six points and three boards.

Oglethorpe led for much of the first period and took a 17-14 edge into the second. Covenant's only lead of the quarter came on Williams' 3-pointer with 5:38 left that gave the Scots a 9-7 lead. Oglethorpe took a 31-29 lead into halftime after Smith cut the Covenant deficit to two with a driving layup with 22 seconds left.

Covenant struggled offensively in the third and Oglethorpe took advantage as the visiting Stormy Petrels upped their lead to nine at 45-36 in the final minute of the period. In the fourth, Oglethorpe extended its lead to 12 at 49-37 with 6:09 remaining.

But Covenant would not go away without a fight and stormed back into the contest. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Hallmark sliced the deficit to 49-43 with 5:41 left. A pair of free throws from Price made it 49-45 with 5:00 to go. Price then made consecutive baskets on the next two Covenant possessions to knot the score at 49 with 2:16 left.

Oglethorpe would hold Covenant scoreless over the final two minutes and iced the game at the free throw line to seal the win.

Lauren Ransom collected a double-double for Oglethorpe with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jada Triplett and Bailey Charles had 10 points apiece, with Triplett recording five assists.

Covenant shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) for the game, while Oglethorpe was slightly worse at 33.3 (20-of-60). Covenant held a 40-32 rebounding edge, but Oglethorpe had 13 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points.
