LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team used a 22-7 run in the third period to pull away from visiting Methodist and take a 60-49 USA South victory on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes PE Center.
Aleigha Williams, coming off a career-high 28 points on Friday, recorded a game-high 14 points with six rebounds and two assists, while Bekah Walter added 12 points for Covenant (6-10, 4-5 USA South). Kaley Hallmark tallied nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in the victory.
Additionally, Covenant received contributions from Rachel Price who totaled eight points and four rebounds, while Joanna Smith grabbed eight boards and had four points. Kate Patrick chipped in seven points and three rebounds off the bench.
The teams traded big quarters throughout the contest, but the third was the difference maker for the Scots. Up 25-23 at halftime, Covenant started the second half on a 12-2 scoring run, capped by an Alex Quimby 3-pointer with 5:15 left in the third that gave the Scots a 37-25 lead. That lead extended to 19 at 47-28 after a Williams layup with 1:36 left in the period.
All told, Covenant shot 47.4 percent in the third period and dished out eight assists on those nine field goals to take a 47-30 lead entering the final quarter.
Methodist (10-6, 5-3 USA South) chipped away at the Covenant lead, getting as close as nine on two occasions in the fourth, but the Scots thwarted each rally to take the conference win.
For the game, Covenant shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor with six 3-pointers and a 38-30 rebound advantage. Covenant registered 15 assists as a team. Methodist was held to 35.8 percent (19-of-53) shooting and 22 turnovers which Covenant converted into 20 points.
The visiting Monarchs were led by Sydney Bryan's 11 points, while Alexis Wallace added 10 points and Jasmine Canady nine.
