Volleyball Falls Twice to Conclude Emory Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team played a pair of new opponents on Saturday to conclude the 2015 Emory Classic, but the Lady Scots came up on the short end in both. Johns Hopkins defeated Covenant 3-1 in the opener on Saturday morning and Susquehanna rallied for a 3-2 win in the finale.

The losses drop Covenant to 1-5 on the season.

MATCH ONE: Johns Hopkins 3, Covenant 1

Jessica Seehorn had a career-high 10 kills, while Ginny Moore and Morgan Opgenorth had nine apiece but Covenant came up on the short end falling to Johns Hopkins in four sets. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23.

Johns Hopkins (3-5) took the first set 25-16 with a strong attack that totaled 16 kills and a .293 hitting percentage. With the set tied at 7-7 after a Seehorn kill, the Blue Jays scored 13 of the next 14 points to build a 20-8 advantage. Covenant cut the deficit to 23-15, but the margin was too much for the Lady Scots to overcome.

The second set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes, but again Johns Hopkins came out on top to go ahead 2-0 in the match. Covenant led 15-14 after an error, but the Blue Jays responded with a quick 6-1 scoring run to go up 20-16 and would go on to claim the set.

Covenant broke through in the third set thanks to a match-high 15 kills. The Lady Scots held to a slim 17-16 lead, but took the next four points as Opgenorth recorded two kills while Schuyler Moore and Hannah Rogers also tallied kills. Johns Hopkins cut the lead to 22-20, but Covenant would take the set after kills from Seehorn and Chelsea VanDyk along with an assisted block from Seehorn and VanDyk.

The fourth set was highly contested as well with six ties and a pair of lead changes. Covenant trailed 24-23 after a VanDyk kill, but the Blue Jays answered with a kill from Elizabeth Wuerstle to end the match.

Schuyler Moore totaled 32 assists and 13 digs for her third double-double of the year. Ariana Buchanan had 21 digs while Ginny Moore and Jaclyn Stuart had 16 and 12, respectively. VanDyk tallied seven kills and five total blocks. In addition to her 10 kills, Seehorn also had three assisted blocks.

Wuerstle and Erica Johnston had 19 kills each to lead Johns Hopkins. Carolyn Zin registered 34 assists and 17 digs.

MATCH TWO: Susquehanna 3, Covenant 2

For a third time this season, Covenant fell in five sets as Susquehanna came away with the victory in the finale of the Emory Classic.Covenant took the first set 25-20 and the third set 25-18, but Susquehanna won 25-20 in the second, 25-19 in the fourth and 16-14 in the fifth.

Ginny Moore had 19 kills and 24 digs, while setting a modern program record with 79 total attacks. VanDyk tallied 13 kills and five block assists, while Schuyler Moore had 43 assists, 11 digs and four kills.

Seven different Covenant players recorded double-digit digs as Ginny Moore led the way with her 24. Hannah Stewart had 13, Seehorn and Stuart had 12 apiece, and Schuyler Moore, Caroline McLeod and Buchanan each had 11. The 11 digs for McLeod is a career-high.

Covenant took the first set rallying from a late deficit with back-to-back kills from Seehorn. The Lady Scots had 12 kills in the set, to Susquehanna's 14, but the Crusaders committed eight errors on the attack and Covenant took advantage of those.

In the second set, Covenant rallied from an 13-6 deficit to trim the Susquehanna lead to 15-13 on an error. The Crusaders kept the Lady Scots at that distance, however, to even the match at 1-1.

Covenant had its best statistical performance in the third set with 15 kills and a .200 hitting percentage en route to a 25-18 win. With the set tied at 8-8, the Lady Scots went ahead 17-10 after a 9-2 spurt highlighted by a pair of Ginny Moore kills as Covenant took a 2-1 match lead.

Susquehanna evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 win in the fourth. The Crusaders used five straight points to break a 15-15 tie and send the match into a deciding fifth set. In the fifth, Covenant took a 10-4 lead after a Ginny Moore kill and a block assist from VanDyk and Schuyler Moore. The lead would not last, however, as the Crusaders rallied for a 14-13 lead and, after an Opgenorth kill to tie, tallied the final two points for the match.

Susquehanna (6-4) was led by Erin Byrne's 20 kills and 18 digs. Marykate Sherkness tallied 15 kills and Maggie O'Hearn had 51 assists and 16 digs. Sarah Paluck led all players with 35 digs.
