ROME, Ga. -- Making its debut in the NCAA Tournament, the Covenant volleyball team fell to Hendrix 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-12) in a first round match on Thursday evening inside the Cage Center on the campus of Berry College.
The loss ends the Lady Scots' season with a 19-13 overall record. Covenant captured the USA South Tournament championship after winning the South division regular season title. Hendrix (26-8) moves on to the second round and will face the winner of Berry-Thomas More which followed.
Playing in her final collegiate match, Chelsea VanDyk recorded a team-high eight kills to bring her career total to 1,377, second-most in program history. Ginny Moore and Morgan Opgenorth had seven kills apiece for the Lady Scots, while Schuyler Moore had 23 assists. Ginny Moore led Covenant with 11 digs and Hannah Stewart added nine.
The first set was evenly played before Hendrix eked out a 25-22 victory. Covenant took a 16-15 lead on a Ginny Moore kill, but Hendrix responded to take a lead it would not relinquish. A Hendrix error cut the Covenant deficit to 21-20, but the Lady Scots would be unable to tie or recapture the lead.
In the second set, Hendrix took a 4-1 lead in the early going and led throughout despite Covenant staying within a couple points most of the game. The Lady Scots trailed 18-16 after a Hannah Rogers kill but could not get closer the rest of the way.
Hendrix would pick up the match victory with a 25-12 third set win.
The Warriors (26-8) were led by Brianna Kelly's 11 kills and MC Rogers' 10 kills. Allison Gaia had 22 assists, while Rogers and Felicia Beeman each produced 14 digs.
