FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant women's soccer team fell at No. 4 seeded Methodist 2-0 on Saturday in a USA South Tournament quarterfinal. The loss ends the year for the Lady Scots who finish with a 10-5-1 overall record.
Methodist (12-6) will move on to the semifinal round on Friday, Nov. 6 to take on either top-seed Meredith or No. 8 seed Ferrum. It is the second consecutive year that Covenant's season has ended at the hands of the Monarchs in the USA South Tournament.
The host Monarchs struck first early in the opening period. Methodist scored twice in a span of less than two minutes to seize control of the match. Deycasha Miller scored the match's first goal in the sixth minute before Capri Clark's header in the eighth minute gave the Monarchs a 2-0 advantage.
Covenant managed four shots on the day with Jenna Vreeland, Rachel Bernard, Christy Barton and Anna Porch all taking one attempt each. Methodist keeper Taylor Ross picks up the shutout.
Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay made five saves and ends the season with an impressive 0.77 goals against average. The freshman had six complete shutouts and contributed to three more in her rookie season.
Despite the loss, Covenant finished with double-digit victories for the fifth time in the last six years and the eight USA South victories are the most since joining the conference in 2013.
