Maryville Defeats Men's Soccer 2-1 on Senior Night

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 loss to USA South rival Maryville on Wednesday night at Chattanooga Christian School.

The Scots move to 5-10-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the USA South. Covenant has clinched a spot in the USA South Tournament, but its quarterfinal round opponent will be determined after Thursday's action concludes. Maryville improves to 13-2-2 on the year and 7-1-2 in league play.

Before the match, Covenant's six seniors (Daniel Kubin, Russell Harrison, Mike Arango, Noah Wiersema, Bryce Bartelt and Andrew Lowe) were honored for their dedication and contributions to the program. Collectively, the group helped the Scots to a NCAA Tournament berth and USA South Tournament championship in 2014.

After a scoreless first half on Wednesday night, Maryville scored twice in the latter part of the second half before holding on for the victory.

Hayden Puryear scored his third goal of the year in the 70th minute to put Maryville ahead 1-0 before Tim Baker made it 2-0 with his fifth goal of the season in the 80th minute.

Covenant cut its deficit in half in the 86th minute as Arango found the back of the net for a third straight match, and fifth goal of the year. Arango dribbled through the Maryville defense and placed his shot past keeper Jon Taylor for his fifth score of the year. Covenant would be unable to get another shot off in the final minutes of the match.

Maryville held a 20-10 shot advantage, but Daniel Kubin made four saves to keep the Scots within striking distance.
