DANVILLE, Va. -- Natalie Smith's goal in the 75th minute helped lift the Covenant women's soccer team past Averett 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Daly Field.
The Lady Scots' defense held the Cougars scoreless as Covenant posted its fourth consecutive shutout on its current four-game winning streak, which helps improve its record to 9-4 overall and 7-3 in the USA South. Averett fell to 2-10-2 overall and 2-7-1 in the conference.
Following a scoreless first half, Covenant weathered the storm as Averett got several good looks midway through the second period. The Lady Scots, who dominated the shot total 25-8, got what proved to be their game-winning goal with less than 16 minutes to play. An Averett foul gave Covenant a free kick in the middle of the field about 28 yards out. Andrea Hunt took the free kick and passed it wide right for Smith, who was all alone. With her left foot, Smith fired a shot that bounced in front of the Averett keeper and over her head, ricocheted off the cross bar and over the line for the score for her second goal of the season.
The Lady Scots added a late goal in the 90th minute when Christy Barton found Summer Bader up the middle from 15 yards out for her third goal of the season.
Rachel Lemay recorded her sixth complete shutout of the season after making three saves.
Barton led all Lady Scots with four shots, including two on goal. Allie Vannoy and Anna Porch each finished with three shots.
