GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Covenant women's soccer team scored three times in the second half and used another strong defensive outing to defeat Greensboro 3-0 on Monday afternoon at Pride Field.
The contest was a make-up from the Sept. 25 match that was postponed due to inclement weather.
The victory is Covenant's third straight to move the Lady Scots to 8-4 overall and 6-3 inside the USA South. It is also the third consecutive shutout recorded by Covenant and the seventh overall on the year. Greensboro drops to 9-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first half, Covenant exploded offensively in the second period. Consecutive shots near the goal ended up with the Lady Scots getting on the board in the 64th minute. Summer Bader's attempt just missed, but Christy Barton's shot just moments later found the back of the net giving Covenant a 1-0 lead. It was Barton's second goal of the year.
In the 79th minute, Carter Steedley collected her first collegiate goal to give the Lady Scots a 2-0 advantage. Barton received credit for the assist on the play. Covenant capped the scoring in the 90th minute when Grace Buys converted on a penalty kick for her first career score.
Rachel Lemay notched her fifth complete shutout of the year by making two saves. Covenant held a 13-7 edge in total shots and 8-2 in shots on goal. Greensboro keeper Brittany Morrison made five saves on the afternoon.
Barton led Covenant with three shots taken, all on target, while Allie Vannoy, Rachel Bernard and Anne Charlotte Strawbridge took two shots apiece.
