DEMOREST, Ga. -- Jordan Brett went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a home run, but the Covenant softball team was defeated twice by 11th-ranked Piedmont on Tuesday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex in Demorest. The host Lions took game one 8-0 before posting a 10-2 victory in game two.
Covenant falls to 10-22 overall and 3-17 in the USA South. Piedmont, which is ranked 11th in the current National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, goes to 31-3 for the year and 19-1 in league play.
Brett was a bright spot offensively for the Lady Scots. The freshman tallied Covenant's lone hit in the first game of the doubleheader and finished 1-for-2. In the nightcap, Brett went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. With her two runs batted in on the day, Brett is now tied for the team-lead with 27 for the season.
In game one, Piedmont starter Brittney Head (13-1) limited Covenant to one hit, a Brett single in the third, and struck out 11 in six innings of work. Piedmont had only a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth before scoring four runs in that inning. The Lions added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth for the final tally.
Cori Hilt (6-11) was effective during the early portions of the game but is saddled with the loss.
Covenant got the bats going a bit in the day's second game. The Lady Scots took a 1-0 lead in the first as consecutive doubles by Morgan Lane and Brett produced a run. After Piedmont took a 2-1 lead in the second, Covenant tied the score on Brett's solo homer in the third.
Piedmont pulled away with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and then two more in the sixth for the 10-2 victory.
The Lady Scots tallied eight hits in the second game, led by Brett's 3-for-3 effort. Lane, Lauren Johns, Madison Quirk, Kaitlyn Sirmons and Morgan Strennen each recorded a hit.
Covenant starter Hannah Rogers (4-11) gets the loss, while Piedmont's Jordin Ellingson (17-2) picks up the victory.
Covenant will return home on Friday to face USA South foe Averett in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The Lady Scots will also host Mary Baldwin on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
