MACON, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team got back on the winning track on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of former conference foe Wesleyan. The Lady Scots took an 8-0 win in game one, followed by a 14-4 triumph in the second game.
Covenant moves to 8-12 overall for the season, while Wesleyan drops to 1-18.
GAME ONE: Covenant 8, Wesleyan 0
Starting pitcher Cori Hilt allowed just three hits and struck out seven over six innings and had two RBIs at the plate to lead the Lady Scots to an 8-0 victory in six innings.
Hilt (5-6) scattered three hits while pitching and was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs at the dish. Morgan Lane finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Jordan Brett was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Morgan Strennen added two hits in two at-bats for Covenant.
Covenant got on the board in the third inning with a run off a Brett double that scored Lane from first base. The Lady Scots scored twice more in the fourth on a Chandler Shepherd RBI single and a Lane RBI groundout to make it 3-0.
The Lady Scots put the game away with five runs in the sixth inning. Lane had a sacrifice fly to left field while Hilt produced a two-RBI single and Nicole White added an RBI double.
GAME TWO: Covenant 14, Wesleyan 4
Five different players had multiple hits for Covenant as the Lady Scots secured the twinbill sweep with a 14-4 victory in game two.
Hannah Rogers (3-6) picked up the win for Covenant by going three innings and surrendering just one run on four hits. Meagan Hess and Madison Quirk each threw an inning in relief.
At the plate, Covenant scored 14 runs on 15 hits in the contest. Lane and Brett had three hits apiece, while Shepherd, Kendall Whann and Kaitlyn Sirmons tallied two hits each. Whann had three RBIs to lead the team.
Covenant scored three times in the first inning as Brett and Whann had RBI singles and White recorded a sacrifice fly. Five more runs were added to the lead in the second inning to make it 8-1. Whann capped that second inning with a two-run single. Lane and Lauren Johns also produced RBIs in the frame.
In the third, Covenant opened the lead to 11-1 with three more runs. Lane doubled home Sirmons and Quirk followed two batters later with an RBI double that scored Lane. Covenant would add one more in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Covenant will be back on the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face Meredith in USA South play. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
