Softball Falls Twice to Ferrum

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team fell twice to visiting Ferrum on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Scots dropped game one 8-0 in five innings before falling 9-5 in the day's second game.

Covenant drops to 2-6 on the season and 0-4 in the USA South. Ferrum improves to 2-4 with the wins and 2-2 inside the conference.

After being limited to four hits in the day's opening game, the Lady Scots scored five runs on nine hits in the second game. Madison Quirk finished with three hits in five at-bats and an RBI for the afternoon. Kaitlyn Sirmons went 3-for-4 with a run scored in game two and Morgan Lane had a hit in each contest.

Ferrum blanked the Lady Scots in game one thanks to Emily Taylor's four-hit shutout and two RBIs each from Chloe Brzycki and Ashley Ammann. The visiting Panthers scored single runs in the first and fourth innings, then exploded for six runs in the fifth inning.

Cori Hilt (1-3) took the loss in game one for Covenant.

In the second game, Ferrum scored five runs in the first and another in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Covenant responded with three runs in its half of the third. Lane drove in Meagan Hess with a single that was followed by a Lauren Johns RBI single. Quirk was hit by a pitch that allowed Lane to score and cut the Lady Scots' deficit to 6-3.

Ferrum scored three more runs in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead. Covenant tallied single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Lane lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Nicole White in the fourth. In the sixth, Hess scored on a wild pitch.

Lane finished game two 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Quirk went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Hess walked three times. Hannah Rogers (1-3) picked up the pitching defeat for Covenant.

Brzycki had two home runs and went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the second game. Miyana Ross (1-0) is credited with the pitching win for Ferrum as she went two innings and allowed one earned run on three hits.

Covenant will be back in action on Tuesday when they host regional foe Birmingham Southern. First pitch on Lookout Mountain for game one is set for 2 p.m.
