Women's Basketball Hosting Two USA South Games This Weekend

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team looks to keep its winning ways going when they host a pair of USA South teams this weekend at Barnes Physical Education Center. The Scots, coming off a 75-72 win over Averett last Saturday, play Methodist on Friday at 5:30 p.m., then Greensboro on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Covenant Update: 4-6, 1-1 USA South

  • Covenant scored its first ever USA South victory on Saturday by defeating Averett 75-72. The Scots shot a season-best 47.6 percent in the win and were led by Jessie Blankenship's 16-point, 12-rebound performance. 
  • In all, five players scored in double figures for the Scots, the first time that has occurred since Nov. 15, 2012 against Hiwassee.
  • Blankenship's double-double on Saturday was her third of the season and second straight. The senior has registered 23 double-doubles in her collegiate career.
  • Morgan Woodward ranks fifth in the USA South in assists per game at 3.4.
  • Averaging 55.8 points per game as a team, but are limiting opponents to 63.8 points and 39.1 percent shooting from the floor (28.2 percent from 3-point territory).
  • This weekend's contests will be the first matchups all-time with Methodist and Greensboro.

About Methodist (6-1, 2-0 USA South):

Series History: First Meeting

  • Methodist is 6-1 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in USA South play entering Friday's contest. The Monarchs are currently riding a six-game winning streak.
  • The Monarchs are coming off a resounding 82-43 win over Huntingdon last Sunday. Ayanna Pegues had 17 points to lead the Monarchs.
  • Coming into this week, Methodist ranked first in the USA South in field goal percentage defense allowing opponents to shoot just 34.5 percent from the floor. The Monarchs are second in scoring defense surrendering 56.7 points per contest.
  • Maya Banks leads the team in scoring at 23.4 points per game. Jackie Lyles (12.3) and Ayanna Pegues (11.3) also average double figures.

Series History: First Meeting

  • Coming into Friday's game at Maryville, Greensboro had won two straight and stood at 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
  • The Pride are led by senior guard Chevena Pickard. Pickard leads the team in points (18.4), rebounds (6.4), and assists per game (3.9). She is second in the USA South in scoring average and first in 3-point percentage at 48.5.
  • Joslyn Spires has twice been named USA South Rookie of the Week, including last week. Spires is averaging 11.9 points and shooting 46.2 percent from 3-point land on the season.
  • Greensboro leads the USA South in scoring averaging 81.6 points per contest. The Pride shoots it at a 42.5 percent clip from the floor and 34.1 percent from downtown. Greensboro outscores its opponents by an average of 25.0 points per game.
