NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- After a tough three-set loss on Tuesday night at Sewanee, the Covenant volleyball team used 20 kills from Chelsea VanDyk to bounce back and defeat Martin Methodist 3-1 (25-13, 25-15, 17-25, 25-20) on Friday evening. It was the opening match of the Scott Jones Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene University.
Covenant moves to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Martin Methodist, an NAIA member, drops to 0-1.
VanDyk compiled 20 kills while committing just four errors for a hitting percentage of .500. Stephanie Kirkpatrick tallied 38 assists and six kills. Estes Carlson had a game-high 16 digs to go along with three kills and four serve aces.
Gloria Watson had 14 kills to lead the Redhawks and setter Sophia Paes registered 28 assists and 12 digs.
Covenant dominated the first two sets. The Lady Scots led early 11-2 and stretched the advantage out to as many as 12 points during the set. VanDyk had five of Covenant's 12 kills in the game. The second set was close from the start until the Lady Scots took a 5-5 tie and scored 17 of the set's next 24 points for a commanding 22-12 lead. A kill by Hannah Rogers ended the frame to give Covenant a 2-0 match lead.
Martin Methodist would claim the third set as the Redhawks seized a lead early in the set.
The fourth set was back-and-forth until the final few points. With the match tied at 19 apiece, the Lady Scots rattled off six of the final seven points, capped by a kill from Cora Schroeder followed by a Martin Methodist attack error to end the match. Covenant was credited with 17 kills in the final set.
Schroeder and Rogers each had six kills with Schroeder adding 12 digs.
Covenant will play twice on Saturday against Siena Heights (11:00 a.m.) followed by a tilt against host Trevecca Nazarene (1:00 p.m.). Live stats and video can be found HERE
